About Beth Purcell

welcomeBeth’s mosaics are inspired by the unique facets of beauty she sees in everyday life: tribal rugs, valentine cards, children’s books, quilts, dreams, ancient and modern art, the waves of the sea, a bird in flight. She is moved by the sensual, the spiritual, the splendid beauty of the earth, the scent of flowers, the spray of seed in spring winds. She melds that with the architecture of space, on buildings, walls, corridors and sidewalks. Once her vision has been sparked she begins the project by hand-cutting each tiny piece from ceramic tiles, dishes, antique china, reclaimed bits and pieces.

Beth’s private commissions range from a staircase in Portland, Oregon, a custom kitchen in Portola Valley, CA, custom home entry ways, and various projects in multiple private residences in Santa Cruz, CA. She has created a broad scope of collaborative works, including portraits out of computer chips for Silicon Valley executives, funeral urns, and plaques commemorating special occasions. In addition, she has completed a number of large commissions for public spaces, including New Brighton Middle School, Santa cruz Waldorf School, Bayview Elementary School, Live Oak Preschool and the Global Exchange storefront in San Francisco.

Beth’s work has been displayed since 1997 in several galleries in California, and she has participated in the juried Open Studios in San Cruz County for 13 years. She also teaches art classes out of her home studio in Santa Cruz.
